SHIBUI KIMONO REMAKE AROHA

is a one-of-a-kind aloha shirt

meticulously crafted by artisans

from carefully selected, unused kimonos.

Carrying Forward the Lineage of Japanese Painting,
Woven into the Pattern

A black kurotomesode bearing the name “Kano Masunobu.”

The Kano school was a prestigious lineage that stood at the very center of Japanese painting,
from the Muromachi period through the Edo era.

True to the legacy of that lineage,
the design unfolds across a gold-leaf ground,
where auspicious motifs—
cranes, pine trees, and flowing water—
are rendered with painterly depth
and a quiet sense of dignity.

Entitled “Shiki Kachōzu” (Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons),
this work expresses the changing rhythms of nature
and the cycle of life
through flowers and birds that symbolize
spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

A traditional subject in Japanese painting,
it reflects a deep reverence for the natural world
and its continual transformation.

A world that was once seen
only in limited, formal settings—

now carried forward
into contemporary life.

Guided by the discerning eye of artisans
deeply versed in kimono craftsmanship,
this piece was reimagined
as an Aloha shirt
a form meant to be worn and lived in, every day.

Because it portrays the four seasons,
this piece transcends any single time of year.

Worn throughout everyday life,
its beauty comes alive more naturally,
breathing quietly alongside the wearer.

And so,
this single garment came into being.

The natural flow of the pattern,
the beauty found in negative space,
the depth of its texture—
all inherent to the kimono itself.

To preserve the spirit of this world,
artisans deeply versed in kimono craftsmanship
carefully read the movement of each motif,
determine the composition in which it appears most beautiful,
and carry out the cutting and sewing accordingly.

Rather than cutting the pattern into fragments,
the design is read as a continuous flow,
then re-composed as a single, unified image
stretching from the front panels through to the back.

In doing so,
the quiet power and refined use of space found in Japanese painting
are elevated into a form
that can be worn in everyday life.

A deliberate placement of the pattern
is hidden along the inside of the placket, behind the buttons.

In moments of movement,
or within a simple, unguarded gesture,
the gold ground and motifs quietly reveal themselves,
becoming a subtle yet refined accent.

By extending careful consideration to every detail,
the dignity and lingering presence inherent to the kimono
are quietly carried forward
into contemporary dress.

A Mark of the Kimono, Preserved in the Back

The back panel, too, honors the continuous flow of the pattern from the front.
The entire back is conceived as a single pictorial plane,
carefully composed so that the story remains unbroken.

At the back shoulders,
the original kamon crest of the kimono is preserved as it was.

Once a symbol of family and formality,
the crest now quietly tells the story
that this garment was, without question,
a kimono in its former life.

Rather than erasing its meaning,
this is a choice to carry it forward.

The finely textured shibo unique to this chirimen silk
adds depth to the gold leaf and colored motifs,
revealing rich expressions
as the light shifts and changes.

It is a texture found only in kimono fabric—
one that embodies both elegance and depth.

The uniqueness that comes only
with a one-of-a-kind piece.

Subtle, yet undeniably present.
